Old Fritz...

…would be 300 Years old on the 24th of January 2012.
akpool.co.uk says: Congratulations!
What was it that made Frederick the Great, also know as Frederick II, King of Prussia, so great?
Old Fritz (as he was called by the people) was inter alia responsible for:
- the recognition of Prussia as the fifth Major power in Europe [Monarchy Prussia >>]
- the introduction of compulsory school attendance (to educate the people) [Children at school >>]
- the Abolition of Torture [Justice Professions >>]
- the introduction of Potatos as food
- the draining of the wild “Drömling” (in the newly developed areas, villages were built & free farmers were settled)
- that larges parts of Bavaria were not exchaged for Belgium (known as the „Potato War“, without the intervention of Prussia, Bavaria at that time would certainly become a part of Austria)
